When two important leaders can’t agree on a country’s name, any optimism one might have about that nation’s prospects must be tempered by realism. So it is with Myanmar, which Aung San Suu Kyi still insists on calling Burma. Formally a “backbench MP”, Ms Suu Kyi’s opinions carry weight given her world renown. Her scrap over the name with Thein Sein, the reformist president, is symptomatic of deeper differences that could yet endanger Myanmar’s transformation into a relatively liberal and well-run state.
