Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday offered an exclusive economic zone only for Japanese investors saying it would offer a great scope for Japanese industrial entrepreneurs to take the opportunity of liberal investment policy of Bangladesh.

She said her government would look forward to hold economic dialogue with Japan aimed at creating the investment friendly exclusive economic zone.

The prime minister said this when chairman and CEO of Japan External Trade Organization (Jetro) Hiroyuki Ishige called on her at her office in Dhaka yesterday. PM’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad briefed reporters after the courtesy call.

Sheikh Hasina told the Jetro chief about her government’s plan to set up special economic zones in every division where foreign investors would get many special facilities for investment.

Bangladesh has a good investment friendly environment apart from its cheap labour and a huge domestic market of over 150mn people, she said.
Expressing satisfaction over the steady increase of bilateral trade between the two countries, Sheikh Hasina hoped that Japanese entrepreneurs would increase import of world-class Bangladeshi products including readymade garments, ceramic, leather and leather goods and IT products.

She also urged Hiroyuki to explore state of the art technology in the field of pharmaceutical, textile, ceramic, apparel, leather and leather goods in Bangladesh.

Recalling her official visit to Japan in 2010 and the subsequent visit of Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Katsuya Okada in May this year Sheikh Hasina stated that Bangladesh and Japan share common perceptions and views on many global issues at regional and international arena.

Ambassador at Large M Ziauddin, PMO Secretary Molla Waheeduzzaman, Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Shiro Sadoshima and press secretary Abul Kalam Azad were present.
