The country needs to make internet more affordable to achieve the penetration levels it so desires, analysts said yesterday.

“Internet penetration is eight times lower in rural areas than in urban ones. So there is need of enforcement and incentive,” said Nazrul Islam Khan, information and communication technology (ICT) secretary.

Although the government plans to reduce the bandwidth price from Tk 8,000 to Tk 5,000 for per megabits per second, Khan suggested going step ahead and slashing it to Tk 3,000. More…

The working committee for water resources management and hydropower development of the tri-nation alliance at its first meeting yesterday accepted a draft framework for future procedure proposed by Bangladesh. The delegates from Bangladesh, India and Bhutan did not discuss any specific hydropower project but rather focused on preparing a framework for tri-lateral cooperation. Primarily, for the hydropower project, Bangladesh has selected nine sites in India and four others in Bhutan — all in trans-boundary rivers. South Asia is regaining its economic momentum, but the recovery in the region with the largest number of poor people could falter in the absence of a stronger investment climate, said the latest South Asia Economic Focus report of the World Bank.

The combined growth of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka was just 4.7 percent in 2012, substantially below pre-crisis levels, according to the report. More…

The government should reduce duty on import of industrial machinery, and basic and intermediary raw materials to encourage entrepreneurs to set up new industries, according to a set of recommendations compiled by the industries ministry.

The government also needs to continue the existing zero duty policy for imports of essential commodities such as food items and 1 percent duty on imported machinery used by export-oriented industries. More…

Eight more luxury hotels will be set up in Bangladesh within next three years, officials said Saturday, adding that the operationalisation of the proposed hotels, upon the completion of the would-be ventures, will provide a big boost to the country’s hospitality industry.

A number of international chain of hotels have come forward to build five star hotels under joint venture arrangements in the fastest growing cities of Dhaka and Chittagong, they said. More…
