Bhutan’s yearly gross revenue from hydropower export to India would be around Nu 45B by early 2018, according to estimates made by a private research firm.

New Delhi, April 21: India plans to build some seven hydel projects in neighbouring Bhutan with combined electricity generating capacity of 7,020 megawatts (MW).

This will be on top of three existing power projects — Chukha, Tala and Kurichhu — which churn out about 1,400 MW and another three — Punatsangchhu-I, Punat-sangchhu-II and Mangdechhu — which are being built and will generate 2,940MW.

A meeting of an empowered joint group headed by Bhutan’s minister for economy was held in Thimpu last month to review six projects for which detailed reports have been prepared. The six projects are the proposed 2,560MW Sankosh project, Chamkharchhu (770MW), Kholongchhu (660MW), Amochhu (540MW), Wangchu (570MW) and the Bunakha (180MW). More…

The working committee for water resources management and hydropower development of the tri-nation alliance at its first meeting yesterday accepted a draft framework for future procedure proposed by Bangladesh. The delegates from Bangladesh, India and Bhutan did not discuss any specific hydropower project but rather focused on preparing a framework for tri-lateral cooperation. Primarily, for the hydropower project, Bangladesh has selected nine sites in India and four others in Bhutan — all in trans-boundary rivers. South Asia is regaining its economic momentum, but the recovery in the region with the largest number of poor people could falter in the absence of a stronger investment climate, said the latest South Asia Economic Focus report of the World Bank.

The combined growth of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka was just 4.7 percent in 2012, substantially below pre-crisis levels, according to the report. More…

It has been a dream for Tanapron, 56, a female teacher from Singburi Vocational College in northern Thailand, to visit Bhutan. But she has been unable to due to the high tourist tariff charged by the Bhutanese government.

“It is beyond my means to go to Bhutan since US$250 per night is expensive for me,” Tanapron said. Bhutan charges US$200-$250 a person per night as minimum daily package for tourists travelling in a group of three or more. More…
