The number of mobile subscribers (SIM cards sold) increased 25.28 per cent during the first half of the year as a result of an expansion in the telecommunications market, according to officials.

Mobile phone service subscribers increased by 3,963,734 or 25.28 per cent to 19,642,563 compared to 15,678,829 ending December 2011, official data from the Ministry of Post and Telecommunication (MPT) showed.

(Reuters) – Myanmar’s government plans to hold trial foreign exchange auctions in March before floating the currency from April 1, the start of the 2012/13 fiscal year, a central bank official said on Monday.

The float would mark the most substantial economic reform yet by Myanmar’s new government and coincides with political reforms that are ending half a century of isolation in the former British colony also known as Burma.

“Arrangements are under way to float the kyat against the U.S. dollar effective April 1 through a sealed auction system,” the official told Reuters, declining to be named. More…

Loans to business from Sri Lanka’s commercial banks rose 34.5 percent to 2,005.9 billion rupees in the year to December 2011, with credit to the state hitting a new monthly high, official data showed.
Credit to business in December remained at a high 60.2 billion rupees in December 2011, slightly lower than the 63.2 billion rupees in November but state credit hit a new high of 52.9 billion rupees up from 32.1 billion rupees a month earlier. More…
